Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers (enough to line a standard baking sheet)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 bag (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts or sprinkles (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Sheet:
    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and spray lightly with nonstick cooking spray.
    • Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer, covering the entire sheet.
  2. Make the Toffee:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Add brown sugar and stir until fully dissolved.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil and let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring.
  3. Pour the Toffee:
    • Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers. Spread gently with a spatula to cover all crackers.
  4. Bake:
    • Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling.
  5. Add Chocolate:
    • Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
    • Let sit for 2-3 minutes, then use a spatula to spread melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
  6. Top and Cool:
    • Sprinkle with chopped nuts, sprinkles, or sea salt for extra flavor.
    • Allow the bars to cool completely at room temperature, or place them in the refrigerator for faster setting.
  7. Break Into Pieces:
    • Once fully set, break into uneven pieces and enjoy!
